John, Have just come back from the Johnshaven fish festival. We
had a great day getting stuck into some dressed crabs - somehow
not as satisfying a whole one which you have to wrestle with to
get all the juicy bits! Met a few locals: May Ritchie fae
Gourdon who married Francie McBey, John Craig who's just made
himself a fantastic little clinker build dingy and my cousin
Vally Stewart. Her mum, Lizzie Anne is the only one of that
generation of "Vulties" still surviving. My dad, Charlie was the
only one of the brothers (Andy, Valentine and Alex) who didn't
go to the sea. He started as a baker with Bannermans and had his
own shop in Johnhaven for a time in the 50's. (I'm a "Johner
douper", nae fae Gurdon!) In his younger days Charlie was
centre-half for Gourdon (Selbie?). He was a stalwart of the doo
club laterly. Is it still on the go? I know that our branch of
the Ritchies got our nickname from my Deddie, Valentine but
what's the origin of "Burry" and "Brimy"? I was in the same
class at Mackie Academy as Ian M. Ritchie, a Brimy. Keep up the
good work, Ian O. Ritchie |

Enjoyed your site - the towns and villages of the
Kincardineshire coast remind me of my native Morayshire. My
GGGGG grandfather, Robert Souter, allegedly moved from
Johnshaven to Lossiemouth around 1790. I wonder if your mate Roy
Souter was connected in any way to the family that became one of
the main fisher families of Lossiemouth?? |

Hola to everybody. Please excuse my english. I'm born in Madrid
(Spain). My father was born in León- North of Spain).- My mother
was born by circumstancies in Mexico D.F- All her family was
from Santander, north of Spain. Now comes the important matter.
The seconf family name of my father was GORDON. I have made some
research and found out that the Gordon family came from a small
village called GOURDON (France), in Provence- Alps Maritime,Cot
d´Azur, between Cannes and Nice, very close to what it is now
MONACO. Ialdo know that at the end of XII century the GORDON
clan moved to the North of France and from the cost of Britanny
salied though the North Sea to a point in the east coast between
Aberdeen and Dundee.- Now if this is exact, then they named this
point GOURDON HARBOUR. I know also that some of the clan moved
further west and the namned other village as GORDON, south of
Edinburgh in Berwickshire. Atention to this : I also know that
much later, in France, the GOURDON name become GORDON. I
continue looking for more details of history. Thank you to
anyone that reads this and has any suggestion. My fondest
regards to every GOURDON and GORDON.

I am looking to the Scottish connection. I can trace our
American roots to early 1800s in North Carolina. |
