Hi John
I came across your site while trying to source some more info
about my ancestors. I am a seventh generation descendent of
James Mowatt that started Mowatt Lane. I have my family tree at
http://mowatts.sampasite.com. I am trying to find all the
history and gossip possible. I would be most grateful for
anything that you might have to offer. When I look at the photos
of the village I wish it was possble for me to visit it, but
South Africa is a long way off. One of the things I have always
wondered about is when my great grandfater
Charles Mowatt b.1864 actually left Gourdon to come to SA. All
we know is that he got marrried in Charlestown in 1890 which is
the back of nothing.
Would be great to hear from you.
Many thanks

I have visited your site a couple of times, and the list of
names I recognise just gets longer and longer, I used to live at
2 McGill Terrace, and now due to ill health retired in sunny
Ayrshire. Great site. |

I found your site while searching for a recipe for sea pie.
Despite coming from Dundee, I had never heard of it until I
arrived in London nearly 50 years ago where it was regularly
served at the canteen of the paper merchants I worked for. I was
intrigued by the fact that it contained, not fish, but beef, but
no-one could explain the derivation.
I never saw or heard of it again until the other evening when a
television programme about Edwardian food featured a vegetable
dish called sea pie. Determined to prove that a meat version
existed, I found your recipe, and now I'm going to make it!

Hello, I enjoyed looking at your site and reminising with my mum
about the days spent in Gourdon as a child.
I spent many a happy summer holiday with my relatives in Gourdon
travelling up from Sheffield. We plan to visit for a couple of
days in May this year.
My grandmother and grandfather (Lizzie Moncur and Thomas Ritchie
Smith) were both born in Gourdon. My maternal Great grandmother
lived all her life in Gourdon and was known as Mem, my great
aunts Phyliss Moncur and Jeannie Moncur and my great uncle David
Moncur (known as Kelly) also lived in Gourdon. They lived at
Gowan Lea where my Aunt Isa now lives.
My mother (Betty Morris) spent all her summer holidays in
Gourdon with her grannie).
My ancestors were fishing folk in Gourdon and were lost at sea.
Their boat was the Jeannie Inglis. There is a family grave in
Gourdon Cemetery with the families names and a picture of the
boat.
Some of the names we remember from our visits as children are
Jimmy Douglas (he kept a lot of beatiful birds and had a dulux
dog called Wellie) Jim Stewart and Brother (they had two great
danes Zenith and Jason), Bessie Ritchie, Ella Patton, Meg
Douglas. Willie Duncan, Bob Mcbay (Uncle Bob the fish
auctioneer) named his little car "Effie". We also have fond
memories of Sam (the paperlad), used to come out in all
weathers.
Many a happy night was spent in the commercial Hotel when May
and Alec Douglas owned it.
Would love to hear from anyone who knew our family. |
